Our Principal

Avery Middle School (AMS) is a great place for kids!

Principal Scott Nicotero playing chess with studentsI know this because the AMS staff and I work tirelessly to make our classrooms, campus, and culture the best in Calaveras County, if not the best anywhere.  We set high expectations for academics, for behavior, for social-emotional well-being... and we have fun doing it!

A little about my journey into this role... I grew up in South Orange County and graduated from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, CA.  I met my wife through a mutual friend, and in 1997 she brought me to Calaveras County where she grew up.  I spent 10 years taking courses through CSU Stanislaus in Turlock, CA, all while working full-time locally.  I earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies, a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential, an M.A. in Education Administration, and an Administrative Services Credential.  I taught 4th grade for 5 years at Columbia Elementary in Tuolumne County.  I then accepted an administrative position in the Empire Union School District (Modesto).  During my 6 years there, I served as a K-8 Assistant Principal (2 yrs), K-6 Elementary Principal (3 yrs), and 7/8 Middle School Assistant Principal (1 yr).

Principal Scott Nicotero with studentsI was fortunate to land the AMS Principal position over 6 years ago, and I haven't looked back.  The consistent support from students, parents, and the Avery community at large has made AMS a school I love to drive to EVERY DAY!  I hope all of you recognize what a special place AMS is and the important role you play in making it amazing.

Thanks for everything you do to help our young Hawks SOAR!
