About Mrs. Woolworth

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School year!

My name is Linda Woolworth, and I am the 8th grade English/Language Arts teacher at AMS. I am looking forward to this new year!  GO GRAMMAR!! HOORAY FOR ESSAYS!

I was raised here in Calaveras County, and was blessed to grow up in the tiny town of Camp Connell. I attended Hazel Fischer Elementary School - in the OLD school building  - and a wonderful memory from my 8th grade year is the Canoeing elective many of my classmates and I enjoyed in the spring at White Pines Lake! (now that's a nice elective idea!!)
My three siblings and I graduated from Bret Harte High; so did both of my parents back in the 1950's, when there was only one large two-story building where the theater arts building is now! Times have changed!

My ELA class will cover Grammar, Writing, Literature/Reading, and everything in between! To my fine incoming scholars: Be prepared, be patient, have a positive attitude and an open mind! It will be a great year!

Homework, Tuesday 10/15/19

Grammar: Pronoun test is this Thursday. You should be reading through the worksheets done in class (pages 16-19).
I Am Malala: Do the Theme Tracker for Chapter 6. Be sure in the "Summary" section you are writing about the theme you chose as the strongest one in that section, and telling how and why it is the strongest in your opinion.

Homework, Monday 10/14/19

RHR Vocabulary:    Lesson 10: Worksheet: Moving Away, page 49
I Am Malala:  Read and annotate Chapter 6.  For the first half of the chapter, your notes should focus on Malala's response to seeing the children of rubbish mountain and how she feels about this situation. What does she do? How does her family try to help others? Make notes about the type of people her mother and father are.  The second half of the chapter includes the political situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan. What do you read about Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and ISI? Make notes about these topics.

Homework, Wednesday 10/9/19

RHR Vocabulary:  Be sure you are studying your Lesson 6 words/POS/Definitions!
Reading: I Am Malala: Periods 2 and 7: Research (look up!) "children of rubbish mountain;" you will find images and articles about these children, who live in various countries. Describe in one brief paragraph who these children are and what they do. Why are they called "children of rubbish (or in some cases "trash") mountain?
Period 4: Read Chapter 5; while you read, write complete sentence answers to the 7 questions on the handout.

Homework

RHR Vocabulary:  No written work tonight, but PLEASE study your Words/POS/and Definitions every day!
Grammar:  Pronoun Test is on Friday. You should be studying the Worksheets that have been returned; we will be reviewing for the next two days in class.
Reading: I Am Malala:  Periods 2 and 7: Read Chapter 5, filling in the Short Response answers on the handout given in class. Be sure your answers are in complete sentences. Period 4: Complete the Theme Tracker for Chapter 4.

Homework

RHR Vocabulary:  Do the Worksheet for Lesson 9.
READING: I Am Malala: For Periods 2 and 7 only: Complete the Theme Tracker for Chapter 4. You don't need the chapter copy, only the Theme Tracker itself. As you read each Summary, decide on which theme you feel is most represented in that Summary, and color in the columns according to how strong you feel each theme is. Sometimes, there will be several themes and at times only one theme will be apparent in the summary. Notice that the second summary goes over the the next page, so you only need to color in the columns once. In the "Analysis" section, you are very briefly telling why you feel the theme(s) you chose are the strongest in that summary.

Note Toor Pekai's schooling (short experience!)
Make comments about Malala's father, Ziauddin's, view of schooling and education; what was his experience trying to get a college education.
Note how Ziauddin's father is a bit harsh!
How did Ziauddin finally get to go to college?
What was happening politically in Pakistan at this time? How did Ziauddin become involved?
New characters are important to note.
Notes about Ziauddin's first school was started; where/what was it like? what troubles did they have? What organization did Ziauddin become the president of?
What interesting facts about marriage in this culture did you read about?
What further troubles happened for Ziauddin and his school?
What new "home" did Malala and her family move into?
What major event was at the end of the chapter?

Remember, annotating is NOT just highlighting!! Take notes, remark on the events, ask questions in the margins!
